Vehicles that are Inoperable or Abandoned for Over 72 Hours on Public Property

1. Vehicles that have been abandoned for over 72 hours can be reported to the Police Service Agency to be towed. To report a vehicle abandoned on public property (streets or other public rights-of-way), call the Agency’s Abandoned Vehicle hotline at (510) 238-6030.

2. Leave a message describing the vehicle, vehicle location, and if possible, the license plate number.

3. The Police will respond within ten days, depending on the number of requests.

 

Removal of Inoperable Vehicles on Private Property
Police Services Agency Vehicle Abatement hotline

1. To report a vehicle abandoned or inoperable on private property call the Police Service Agency’s Vehicle Abatement hotline, at (510) 238-6040.

2. Leave a message describing the vehicle and the vehicle location.

3. The Police will inspect the property and generate a warning letter to the citizen within five days, at which point the property owner has ten days to remove the vehicle (without extensions or appeals).

4. If the property owner does not respond or is not locatable, the City will initiate a legal process of notifying the property owner and registered owner of the vehicle (without extensions or appeals), which usually takes approximately six weeks.

  • Dumping (garbage/debris) that blocks the public right-of-way (vehicular or pedestrian traffic)
  • Flooding
  • Manholes overflowing, missing grates, missing manhole covers
  • Sewage backup on public or private properties
  • Sewer odor
  • Slides (land, rock, or mud) that block the public right-of-way
  • Stop signs that are knocked down
  • Traffic signals that are broken
  • Tree limbs that are broken or hanging, and are over the sidewalk or street
  • Trees or limbs that have fallen and are blocking the travel portion of the roadway
  • Trees that have fallen and involve power lines
