the best security system - dogs

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you probably know I became a dog fanatic for the first time in my life after purchasing my two Giant Schnauzers, East and West. This has been one of the most rewarding change in my life - learning about dogs and my passion for dogs.

buffy.jpgI read an SF Chronicle article today about Buffy, the German Shepherd who leaped at an armed robber to defend her owner. Unfortunately, Buffy was shot, and her leg may be amputated. They are hoping to save her leg, and they are also monitoring a pre-existing kidney problem. Buffy is a loving dog, who has no history of violent tendencies, and she is known to break up fights between the kids, even play fights. Yet, when her family is under threat, she attacks. This is the kind of loyalty you receive from dogs that is immeasurable to any other type of loyalty.

Why post this story? Because I feel my dogs would do the exact same for me. I am a big advocate of improving dog friendliness in our neighborhood, in particular our parks. It is a fact the presence of dogs reduces crime. One alarm system research I did listed having dogs as the #1 security system, and then their own alarm system as #2. The benefits of good dogs far out-weigh the inconveniences of bad dogs (or should I say bad owners of dogs).

Dimond Park has a no dog policy. I don’t understand why. I notice people tend to ignore this policy, but it would be nice to not have to break rules.

FYI. If you are interested in contributing to Buffy’s medical expenses, you can send donations to Bay Area Veterinary Specialists, 14790 Washington Avenue, San Leandro, CA 94578, or call (510) 483-7387.
